A Comilla court yesterday sent BNP standing committee member MK Anwar to jail rejecting his bail petition in a case for petrol bomb attack on a bus in Chouddogram upazila of the district on February 3 last, reports UNB.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahidullah Kaiser passed the order when MK Anwar appeared before the session court-5 and pleaded for his bail, Anwar’s lawyer Md Harunur Rashid told reporters after the hearing.
On February 3, eight people were killed in a petrol bomb attack on a bus at Chouddogram upazila. Later, sub-inspector Nuruzzaman Hawladar of Chouddogram Police Station filed two cases against 56 persons in this connection under the Explosives Substance Act.
BNP leader MK Anwar along with its chairperson Khaleda Zia, standing committee members Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mian and joint secretary general Rizvi Ahmed, were indicted in one of the two cases for instigating the petrol bomb attack.
Meanwhile, protesting the arrest of party chairperson’s adviser and senior journalist Shawkat Mahmud, BNP yesterday alleged that its leaders and activists are being subjected to government’s political reprisal.
“The way DB police have arrested our party chairperson’s adviser and journalist leader Shawkat Mahmud, we denounce it,” said party spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon.
