Theatre troupe Aranyak Natyadal will stage their much-acclaimed production ‘Ebong Bidyasagar’ today at 7pm at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segun Bagicha in the capital. The play will be brought to the stage as a part of the ongoing weeklong theatre festival ‘Itihaser Mohanayakera’ organised by Universal Theatre.
Written by Mannan Hira and directed by Mamunur Rashid, the play is set in mid-nineteenth century Calcutta (Now Kolkata) —a period that is referred to as the Bengal Renaissance. It is a time when the city of Kolkata is in transition, and in the play, the central character, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, or Bidyasagar in Bangla, a scholar, philosopher and social reformer, has become a leading reformer who faces many challenges as he attempts to bring about an end to such practices as ‘Sati Daho’ and encourages Hindu widows to remarry.
The festival ‘Itihaser Mohanayakera’ sheds light on the life and works of Kobi Guru Rabindranath Tagore, Baul Samrat Lalon, Surya Sen, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Mahatma Gandhi, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Gautam Buddha by staging different plays related to them.
The festival is supported by Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Dhaka Bank and Bank Asia.
Tickets will be available in front of the hall before the show. For advance booking, you can contact at 01752026508, 01677170723.
