The National Board of Revenue’s (NBR) tax fair ended Tuesday with record amount of tax return this year. It is a piece of good news that an unprecedented enthusiasm was seen among the people in general to pay their due tax, and the idea of organizing tax fair each year to generate revenue has indeed clicked. There are reasons for it.
| Our nuclear The idea of organizing tax fair each year to generate revenue has indeed clicked |
First of all is the hassle a tax payer usually faces when they go to pay their return to different tax offices in the country. The tax officials make the process complex and lengthy and, of course, they need to pay bribe, clearly to make the submission of tax return hassle-free. In the tax fair, the payers do not have to bother all these problems. Though many complained that they indeed had to face some problems at the fair—not the kind people usually face at other times—at least here it was certain that people involved in the business of accepting tax return would do their job.
The crowd became so huge that the NBR authorities had to extend their time up to 10 p.m. at night from 5 p.m. in the last two days. And it is certain that in the coming years, the NBR would not be able to manage the crowd on the limited space of present fair at Agargaon in the capital. Some has already suggested that at multiple venues of the capital—at least one in DNCC and other in DSCC--the fair could be arranged.
If the NBR finds that this would make smooth and easier the work of return submissions for the inhabitant of this mega city and will increase revenue collection, it can go for doing so. This year there might be a person at Jatrabari who did not venture to come to Agargaon because of the distance, even though he was willing to pay tax.
By the tax that the people pay each year, the government runs its activities. That is why it is rather obligatory, on the part of the NBR, to see that they pay their tax easily, at the fair compound or at the relevant tax offices all across the country. If prevalence of bribe in the tax department could be minimised and tax dodgers, especially the big ones, could be encouraged or forced to pay their taxes, ensuring that the money is well spent for the development of country’s each sector, we can be fairly optimistic about our country that we love.
