Today, on the third day of the weeklong theatre festival titled ‘Itihaser Mohanayokera’, Chittagong Shilpakala Academy Repertory Natyadal will stage its play ‘Surya Sen’ at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the capital.
Featuring seven much-acclaimed plays from Bangladesh and India, the festival has been organised by Universal Theatre. Cultural Minister Asaduzzaman Noor inaugurated the festival as chief guest on the BSA premises on Saturday, while International Theater Institute (ITI) Honorary President Ramendu Majumdar, President of Bangladesh Centre of International Theatre Institute Nasiruddin Yusuf and General Secretary of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote Hasan Arif attended the event as special guests.
Besides, Secretary General of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation Aktaruzzaman and General Secretary of Bangladesh Pothonatok Parishad Ahmed Gias delivered speeches at the inaugural ceremony. Presided over by festival convener Pulak Raha, President of Universal Theatre Azizul Parvez delivered welcome speech.
After the inauguration ceremony, theatre troupe Palakar staged its play titled ‘Banglar Mati Banglar Jol’ based on the life of Poet Rabindranath Tagore. Written by late noted wordsmith Syed Shamsul Haq, the play has been directed by veteran thespian Ataur Rahman.
On the other hand, prominent theatre troupe Theatre (Bailey Road) staged its acclaimed play titled ‘Baramkhana’ on the second day of the festival yesterday. Inspired by Sunil Gangapadhyay’s novel ‘Moner Manush’, a narrative on the life and works of Lalon, ‘Baramkhana’ is scripted by Pantho Shahriar and directed by Tropa Majumder.
The festival sheds light on the life and works of Kobi Guru Rabindranath Tagore, Baul Samrat Lalon, Surya Sen, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Mahatma Gandhi, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Gautam Buddha by staging different plays related to them.
The participating theatre troupes are—Palakar from Dhaka, Chittagong District Shilpakala Academy Repertory, Loko Natyadal, Aranyank, host troupe Universal Theatre and Kalyani Natya Bhabna from West Bengal, India. The plays will be staged everyday at 7pm at the National Theatre Hall of BSA, until November 10.
The festival is supported by Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Dhaka Bank and Bank Asia.
