Fish trader hacked to death
A fish trader was hacked to death allegedly by extortionists in Kolatia area in Keraniganj early yesterday, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Salauddin, 38, a resident of Khanakandi area of Kolatia.
Shah Alam, in-charge of Kolatia outpost under Keraniganj Model Police Station, said some local stalkers have demanded Tk five lakh from Salauddin as extortion.
Following his refusal to meet up their demand, the extortionists called him around 12:00 am making a false alarm that fish from his farm is being looted.
When Salauddin reached near his farm, they started hacking him indiscriminately, leaving him injured critically.
Later, the injured was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 2am where he succumbed to his injuries around 7am.
Salauddin returned home from Oman two years back and then established a fishing farm in Khankandi area, said the police officer.
Man killed in road accident
A young man was killed in a road accident in House Building area in the city’s Uttara early yesterday, reports UNB.
Police said a speedy truck knocked down the young man, aged around 28, at 3:15 am, leaving him injured.
Later, he was sent to Tongi Hospital where doctors declared him dead, said sub-inspector Mofazzal Hossain of Uttara West Police Station.
Later, his body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, the SI added.
Fire burns 12 shops in Sylhet
Sylhet: Twelve shops were gutted as a fire broke out at Caraboi Bazar of Sewla Union in Beanibazar upazila on early yesterday, reports UNB.
Local sources said the fire originated from an electric short circuit from a store around 1:00 am at Mozammel Ali Market and it soon engulfed the adjoining eleven other shops. Locals rushed there and brought the fire under control after frantic efforts. The affected owners claimed that the estimated loss caused by the fire is about Tk 50 lakh.
Bangladeshi urban planner gets recognition in US
Nabila Nur, a Bangladeshi, has recently achieved national recognition in US as she became a member of American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) after going through the rigorous process of qualifying and passing the AICP exam.
AICP is the professional institution of American Planning Association (APA) and it verifies professional planners’ qualifications through a qualifying process and an exam held on national level, says a press release.
Back in 2012, Nabila Nur graduated from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in urban planning and started pursuing her master degree in urban planning from the University of Texas at Arlington, with a dream of further understanding the complicated nature of urbanization throughout the world and contributing in improving communities.
She completed her masters in 2014 and has since been working as a professional planner in US.
4 members of kidnapping gang held, 2 abductees rescued
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested four members of a kidnapping gang and rescued two abductees from city’s Mugda area on Saturday night, reports UNB.
The identities of the arrestees and rescued persons could not be ascertained yet.
Tipped off, a team of Rab-3 conducted a drive in the area at night and arrested the four kidnappers of an organised gang and rescued two victims, according to an SMS sent by the elite force on Sunday morning.
