The BNP will take part in the next general election under any adverse situation, said the party's standing committee member Moudud Ahmed. “We will join the next elections, no matter what the situation is at that time and whatever repression is carried out on us,” he said while speaking at a meeting at the Jatiya Press Club.
The BNP leader expressed optimism that a "mass revolution" would take place if the government fails reach a consensus before the national elections. Swadhinata Forum, a pro-BNP platform, organised the meeting in protest against the attack on BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade during her four-day trip to Cox’s Bazar.
“This government will be forced to reach a consensus with the BNP. The government must accept the BNP’s demand for a poll-time supportive government,” Moudad said.
He warned that there would be no election if the BNP does not take part in it. Thus, the government must hold the polls ensuring the BNP's participation, he added.
Referring to the attacks on Khaleda’s motorcade, Moudad said ruling quarters carried out the attack only to stop advancement of the BNP chairperson.
The BNP leader also said that the advancement of the BNP cannot be thwarted and the chairperson would again embark on such a tour. The government’s repressive acts have broken the tolerance of the people and now they have no alternative, he added.
Moudad claimed that the AL, during its 10 years in power, has proved itself as a terrorist organisation. Presided over by Abu Naser Rahmatullah, president of Swadhinata Forum, the meeting was also addressed, by BNP vice- chairman Shawkat Mahmud, Abdus Salam, Habibur Rahman Habib and Mahbubuddin Khokan, among others.
The BNP had boycotted the January 5, 2014 general election, as it was held under the ruling AL and the government did not fulfil the BNP’s demand for holding the polls under a caretaker government. The BNP is now demanding that the next elections be held under an election-time supportive government.
The government, however, says that the polls would be held under the present government in accordance with the Constitution. BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told a press conference that they sought permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 8 to mark “National Revolution and Solidarity Day”.
He alleged that the government is trying to force BNP activists in Feni to make a confessional statement in the attack on Khaleda’s motorcade case.
On Thursday, the party chalked out a 10-day programme to observe “National Revolution and Solidarity Day”, marking, what it called, the civil-military “uprising of November 7, 1975”.
