Curtain rises on weeklong theatre festival today

Curtain rises on a weeklong theatre festival titled ‘Itihaser Mohanayokera’ on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segun Bagicha in the capital today. Featuring seven much-acclaimed plays from Bangladesh and India, the festival has been organised by Universal Theatre. The inauguration ceremony of the festival will be held at 5:30pm today.

Cultural Minister Asaduzzaman Noor will inaugurate the festival as chief guest today, while honourary president of International Theatre Institute Ramendu Majumdar, Bangladesh Centre of International Theatre Institute president Nasir Uddin Yusuf and general secretary of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote Hasan Arif will attend the event as special guests. Secretary general of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation Aktaruzzaman and general secretary of Bangladesh Pothonatok Parishad Ahmed Gias will deliver welcome speech at the inaugural ceremony.

The festival will shed light on the life and works of Kobi guru Rabindranath Tagore, Baul Samrat Lalon, Surja Sen, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Mahatma Gandhi, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Gautam Buddha by staging different plays related to them.

The participating theatre troupes are—Palakar from Dhaka, Chittagong District Shilpakala Academy Repertory, Loko Natyadal, Aranyank, host troupe Universal Theatre and Kalyani Natya Bhabna from West Bengal, India. The plays will be staged everyday at 7pm at the National Theatre Hall of BSA, until November 10.

Today, on the opening day of the festival, Palakar will stage its popular play titled ‘Banglar Mati Banglar Jol’, which has been produced based on Rabindranath Tagore's 'Chinnapatra'.

The upcoming plays are ‘Baramkhana’ (Theatre) on Sunday, ‘Surjasen’ (Chittagong District Shilpakala Academy Repertory) on Monday, ‘Mujib Manei Mukti’ (Loko Natyadal) on Tuesday, ‘Mahatma’ (Universal Theatre) on Wednesday, ‘Ebong Vidyasagar’ (Aranyak Natyadal) on Thursday and ‘Shraman’ (Kalyani Natya Bhabna) on Friday.

To note, a press conference held at the BSA’s Media Centre on Thursday to disclose detailed information about the festival. Azizul Parvez, Universal Theatre president, read out written speech at the press meet. Convener of the festival Pulak Raha, member secretary Shawkat Ali Mansur, organising secretary of Universal Theatre Deen Islam Shamol and theatre artiste Abul Kalam Azad were also present.

The festival is supported by Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Dhaka Bank and Bank Asia.
