Dhaka-Sylhet face off in opener today

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) zeal rose to the fever pitch with the seven teams gearing up to reach the zenith by securing the much coveted title. The 40-day tournament, the country’s lone franchise-based T20 event, is all set to roll on to the ground today with two matches—defending champions and tournament favourite Dhaka Dynamites will face of new comer Sylhet Sixers while Rangpur Riders, believed to the main contender of Dhaka will lock horns with last year’s runners-up Rajshahi Kings. Both of the matches will be held at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, the first time that BPL gets any new venue other than Dhaka, Chittagong and Khulna.

This is also the first time that the BPL starts from outside of Dhaka and even with no opening ceremony. The expenditure of the opening ceremony was donated to the flood affected people which was a praiseworthy job. “This is really a nice venue. It is good to see that the BCB adds a new venue for the tournament. There are four dressing rooms and all are international standard. The beauty of the stadium actually stands out amongst others,” said Mashrafe Bin Mortaza.

Sylhet venue has been added along with Dhaka and Chittagong this time as per the future plan of expanding the BPL throughout the country. Since it was unveiled for the International matches, it is considered as the most beautiful stadium of the country because of its cynic beauty. The stadium, almost at the end of the city, is surrounded by hills and tea garden, making the place a sight to behold. Almost 10 thousand spectators now could watch the game and after the completion of the full work, the stadium would contain 20,000 spectators at a time.

So far some international matches and aged level matches were held at this ground but for the first time a tournament of such magnitude is being held here, making a buzz for the people of the Sylhet. All tickets were sold out immediately once those were put on sale. The tickets are now being found in the black market with high price.

The demand of tickets is the testament of how the tournament set ablaze the city. However not only ticket, once somebody from outside enters into the city, he would easily understand the fervor the BPL created in the city. Almost all of the crucial places of the city are shrouded by festoon and banners of the different franchisees and obviously Sylhet Sixers are ahead than others since it’s their home ground.

“It will be an exciting match as the Sylhet Sixers are the host team. I am expecting a full house crowd, fully knowing that they will get behind Sylhet. I think the competition will be increased with five foreign players playing this time in a tam,” Dhaka Dynamites captain Shakib Al Hasan said.
