Jail killing most shameful in world history: Speakers

CHITTAGONG: Jail Killing Day was observed in the port city as the most shameful day of world history, reports BSS. On this day 42 years ago, four national leaders were assassinated inside Dhaka Central Jail. At a function on the occasion, the speakers here said Jail Killing Day is one the shameful days of the world history and it was a planned and deep-rooted conspiracy after the assassination of Bangabandhu to erase the country's name from the global map.

They said the killers wanted to make Awami League (AL) a leader-less part by killing the four liberation war heroes and national leaders at Dhaka Central Jail on November 3, 1975 just 79 days after the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members.

AL and its front organisations, different socio-cultural and professional organisations observed the day holding elaborate programmes.The day's programme began with the hoisting of national, party and black flags half-mast atop AL offices. Placing wreaths at the portraits of the four national leaders, wearing black badges, arranging Milad Mahfil, Khatme Quran, special prayers at mosques, temples, churches and pagodas and discussions were the main features of the day.

Chittagong city AL arranged a memorial meeting at its Darulfazal Market office at 4 pm yesterday. City AL President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury presided over the meeting while city AL general secretary and city mayor AZM Nasir Uddin, AL leaders, Advocate Iftakher Saimul Chowdhury, Altaf Hossain Bacchu and Badiul Alam, among others, took part in the meeting.

Apart from Chittagong city, north and south district units of AL and its various front organisations, Bangladesh Chhatra League unit of Chittagong University, City College, government Commerce College, Islamia College and MES College unit brought out processions in their respective campuses demanding proper punishment of the killers of the four national leaders.

A Doa Mahfil and discussion was held at Islamic Foundation divisional office at Andarkilla at 11 am yesterday. Chittagong north and south district AL also organised separate meetings at its offices at Andarkilla and dost building in the city respectively yesterday morning.

Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharrf Hossain addressed the function as the chief guest with Chittagong north district AL president Nurul Alam Chowdhury in the chair.

In another discussion, Presided over by its president Muslem Uddin Ahmed, the meeting was addressed, among others, by general secretary Mofizur Rahman and AL leaders- Motahar Islam Chowdhury and Mujibur Rahman, CIP. Chittagong north district AL observed the day through daylong programmes including discussion at its office.

In Rajshahi, the day was observed in the city paying rich tribute to the four national leaders. City unit of Bangladesh Awami League and its front-organisations observed the day through various programmes paying due homage to the martyred.

Marking the day, scores of wreaths were placed on the grave of Shaheed AHM Kamaruzzaman, one of the four national leaders, in city's Kadirganj family graveyard.

The programme also included mourning rallies and garlanding of portraits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four other national leaders at Awami League office.

District and city units of Awami League and its front organisations brought out a mournful rally from in front of the party office and placed wreaths on the grave.

Apart from this, various government, semi-government and autonomous organisations also placed wreaths since early morning.
