Waste management a must for sustainable development
Amu tells 6th Regional 3R Forum in Asia and the Pacific

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu yesterday said participatory waste management is a must to ensure sustainable development, reports UNB.
Leaving out the municipal-based traditional waste management, city dwellers, industry owners and local government institutions should work together to manage waste in a scientific manner, he told a discussion in Mal, the capital of Maldives. The discussion was held at Dharubaaruge International Conference Centre as part of the ongoing 6th Regional 3R Forum in Asia and the Pacific, according to a message received in Dhaka yesterday.
The Maldives government with support from the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) and the Japan government organised the three-day regional forum that concludes Wednesday.
Amu said Bangladesh has already introduced its National 3R Strategy (Reduce, Recycle and Reuse) to manage waste, and recommended the countries of Asia Pacific to follow the 3R strategy to manage their waste under Public-Private-Community Partnership.
He said Bangladesh is converting the waste it generates into valuable resources by applying 3R strategy. We have already created a scope to manage and reuse industrial waste by setting up modern effluent treatment plants (ETPs) and as a result, productivity of these industries has increased, the industries minister said.
Maldives Education Minister Aishath Shiham, Minister for Presidents Office Mohamed Hussain Shareef, Minister for Economic Affairs Mohamed Saeed and Foreign Minister Dhunya Maumoon also spoke at the discussion.
