Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday urged BNP to evaluate the party's popularity by taking part in the next parliament election, reports BSS. "We want BNP's participation in the polls. Election Commission should not favour any party. We want impartial role of Election Commission," he told a seminar held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital. Awami League (AL) Publicity and Publications Sub-Committee organised the seminar titled "Bangladesh Awami League's 11-point proposal to Election Commission: Public Proposals". Sub-Committee Chairman and AL advisory council member HT Imam chaired the seminar while Justice Syed Amirul Islam, Justice Md Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, security expert Major General (retd) Abdur Rashid, University Grants Commission Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan, Bangladesh Federal Journalists Union (BFUJ) President Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, AL Central Working Committee member Advocate Riazul Kabir Kawser, Sub-Committee member Kashem Humayun and Subhash Singha Roy, among others, addressed the event.
Quader, also minister for road transport and bridges, said: "We do not want Election Commission would face questions by making remarks in favour of any political party. But BNP wants such an Election Commission so that it can go to state power by any means." He said AL gave proposals to the EC for public interests; on the other hand, what BNP has given to the commission is only for the interest of going to state power.
The AL general secretary said BNP does politics for next election not for next generation, but AL does politics for the betterment of the next generation. About the recent attack on BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia's motorcade in Feni, Quader said it is now clear that "BNP has orchestrated a drama". He said BNP wanted to draw the attention of media.
