Speaker of India’s West Bengal Bidhan Sabha, Biman Bandopadhay, was emotionally overwhelmed on his arrival at Barisal, his birthplace, yesterday. Bandopadhyay arrived here by air on a two-day visit yesterday afternoon. Senior officials of Barisal Division, district, city, and police welcomed him at the Barisal airport.
Immediately after touching Barisal, Bandopadhay expressed his deep attachment to the land and got emotional. “I'm quite overwhelmed,” he told the waiting journalists.
He also said he was born in Barisal Douglas Boarding (a Christian maternity centre of past years) on Bogura Road of Barisal city. His father, Prantosh Bandopadhay, and grandfather, Satish Chandra Bandopadhay, were lawyers. They lived in a house near the Govt BM College. The family left Barisal during a riot situation in 1950.
“We faced a very hard time. I heard a lot about my birthplace, Barisal, from my parents. I have waited a long time for this moment. I wish everyone the best,” Bandopadhyay said.
He went to the Barisal Circuit House after meeting journalists. He is scheduled to visit his ancestral house on BM College Road today (Friday) morning. He will visit the Mahilara Hindu Moth, Goila Manasa Mandir, Charon Kobi Mukundo Das Kalibari and the Barisal Moha Swashan during his brief visit. He will leave Barisal by air on Saturday noon.
