The Chairperson of Small Branches of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) on Thursday stressed the need for convincing youths to actively participate in politics, reports UNB. "The youths have to be encouraged in politics through addressing the areas like good governance, transparency, and curbing corruption," said CPA Small Branches chief Angelo Farrugia.
Speaking at a press conference at a city hotel before chairing the 36th Small Branches Conference, he said they in their strategic plan incorporated the issue as to how to encourage and convince the youth community to actively take part in politics. Farrugia, Speaker of Malta parliament, said the issues, including climate change and youth participation in politics, contained in the strategy plan of the small branches which would be discussed in their conference.
Those countries or legislatures have half a million or less population belonging to small branches, according to Farrugia. There are 43 small branches in the CPA.
Out of 2.4 billion population of the Commonwealth countries, 60 percent belong to the youths of 30 years old, according to a CPA handout.
Although the eight-day 63rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference kicked off on Wednesday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will formally inaugurate it at the South Plaza of Parliament on Sunday.
The theme of the conference is 'Continuing to Enhancing the High Standards of Performance of Parliamentarians'.
As of 1pm on Thursday, 82 delegates, including five speakers of national parliaments from various countries, joined the CPC, according to the CPC liaison office.
The office said some 562 CPA delegates from the Commonwealth member states registered till Wednesday for attending the conference.
Replying to a question, Farrugia said the major problem the small branches are facing is a particular problem of the world, in which the small branches cannot address alone on its own.
Citing an example, he said still there is a big debate whether the Paris agreement on climate change is going to be enforced in its totality or not.
The Malta Speaker said small branches cannot address a problem of the world if it is not completely done by larger branches.
He said small branches will have to work collectively with larger branches to address the adverse impact of climate change.
Addressing the opening session of 36th small branches conference, CPA executive committee chairperson Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said the Commonwealth should raise a united voice at the international climate change dialogue under the framework of Paris Agreement to address problems of countries most vulnerable to climate change.
She said Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries in terms of adverse impact of climate change.
Dr Shirin said small countries are more vulnerable to the bad impact of climate change. "It's a global concern. Collective efforts must be made to deal with the challenges."
