All-women contest for 22nd chairperson of CPA executive body

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) members are going to elect the 22nd chairperson of its executive body, who will also be a woman, for the next three years, sources said. The CPA has already decided for the election on November 7 when three women candidates from Caribbean, Pacific and African regions, out of its nine regions, will contest. However, the names of the candidates could not be ascertained immediately. The newly elected will replace current chairperson and speaker of Bangladesh Parliament Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudury. There are nine regions of CPA which are Africa, Asia, Australia, British Island and Mediterranean, Canada, Caribbean Americus and Atlantic, India, Pacific and South-East Asia. There are 213 votes in this region. Of them, there are 30 votes of the executive committee. These voters will cast votes to elect the next chairperson for the executive body of CPA.

Asked about the candidates, Shirin Sharmin told The Independent that the election of the chairperson is a big attraction for the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) this year. “Three women candidates have already decided to contest the elections for the post of chairperson of CPA executive body. So it can clearly be said that the next chairperson will also be a woman. It’s a good news for women as it is ensuring women’s participation,” she added.

Right now, Shirin Sharmin is carrying out her responsibility as the 21st Chairperson of CPA as per the CPA constitution. One of the components of the CPA is to increase the number of women participation in all spheres of life including in the parliament and decision making process, she said.

Even in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has got a female president. This CPA is also getting another woman chairperson at its highest policy making executive body for three years, she said.

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, MP was elected as the Chairperson of the CPA Executive Committee in October 2014 for a three-year term during the annual Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference and General Assembly of the CPA.
