Sonam Sultana Soma of Bangladesh Ansar earned the unique distinction of winning a double crown in the 37t National Senior Table Tennis Championship which ended at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Indoor Gymnasium on Monday night in the capital.

Soma bagged the women’s singles title with a straight 4-0 games win over Rumi of Bangladesh Army to regain her throne after four years. However, she won two major national level tournaments this season to prove her worth as the best female player of the country.

Soma pairing with Mou defeating Saleha and Ankhi of Biman Bangladesh by 3-1 games in the final. Soma-Mou pair eliminated Rahima and Rumi of Bangladesh Army by 3-2 games in the semifinal. Saleha and Ankhi beat Cynthi and Tushi of Ansar in the other semifinal.

Soma missed a triple crown narrowly when she pairing with  Manash went down to Rocky and Rahima of Army in the mixed doubles semifinal. Rocky and Rahima of Army clinched the mixed doubles title.

However she helped her Bangladesh Ansar to clinch the women’s team title beating a strong Bangladesh Army 3-0 in the final.

The coveted men’s singles title went to Mohammed Javed of Ansar who defeated Md Rocky of Army by 4-2 games in the final.  Ridoy of Army beat former national champion Md Mahbub of Ansar to bag the third place. Hasibul and Rocky shattered Javed ‘s hopes of winning a double crown when the former won the men’s double event by 3-2 games.  Ridoy played as Javed’s partner.

Rocky by virtue of bagging the title also completed a double crown.

In fact Bangladesh Ansar won maximum title with claiming the most prestigious men’s team title beating Bangladesh Army in the final.

Bangladesh Ansar should owe much to its coach Mohammed Ali who is actively groomed the players to fare well in the national championship.
