Even though, most of the candidates were elected unopposed for Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director posts, there was much fanfare and festivity for the election in two divisions from which the councilors elected three more directors to complete the procedure.
Ruling party Awami League lawmaker and Bangladesh’s first Test captain Naimur Rahman Durjoy, Syed Ashfaqul Islam and veteran organiser Alamgir Hossain Khan Alo are the three who were elected unofficially through the polls yesterday to complete 25-member board of directors body for the BCB.
Durjoy, a councilor from Manikganj and Ashfaqul Islam, a councilor from Kishoreganj won in the election that determined the two directors from the Dhaka Division. Alo beat MA Awal Bhulu, the director of the just dissolved committee and a candidate from Nazmul Hasan Papon panel in the election of Barisal Division. In fact Nazmul’s panel wept the election excepting two posts.
Both Durjoy and Ashraful bagged 13 votes each as 18 councilors cast their votes in Dhaka Division. The other two candidates Tanvir Ahmed Tito, councilor from Narayanganj and Shahinul Islam Bhuiyan, councilor from Narsingdi got 7 and 3 votes respectively.
Seven voters exercised their vote in Barisal Division from which Alo managed to get a landslide victory with five votes. Bhulu got just two votes. This was surprising result for many since Bhulu was outright favourite given he was not only a director of the preceding committee but also the chairman of the women’s wing.
Barisal Division is the one where the league was not being held at regular basis, which is what cost Bhulu the election, according to the some councilors of the Barisal. Alo also said it is unfortunate that Barisal venue even couldn’t organise any tournament.
“It is unfortunate that Barisal was forbidden for sports during the reign of Pakistan government. Once we got an independent Bangladesh, we expected the sports to be held at regular basis. But unfortunately again, cricket didn’t get any priority here. There is a nice venue. But no league is held,” he said.
“It is my top priority to start league as early as possible in Barisal Division.”
He added: “I am delighted to be elected from this region. Many believed that I’ll withdraw my nomination paper but in my playing life I have never given anyone walkover.”
Another newcomer Ashfaqul Islam also was delighted to be elected from the division where there were some heavyweight candidates. In Dhaka Division, Durjoy was in Nazmul Hasan Papon’s panel while the other three candidates including Ashfaqul took part in the polls independently. Yet Tanvir Ahmed Tito was considered favourite. However, contrary to the popular belief, Ashfaqul bagged joint highest votes.
“I prevailed in after a tough competition. So it was a delighting experience,” said Ashfaqul, also the cousin of the former Awami League secretary Syed Ashraful Islam.
“The league structure of every districts should be bolstered if we want to get strong pipeline from our national team. So the top priority is to organise cricket league in every district regularly. However we’ll discuss with our board president and then will devise a plan to what we need to do to strengthen the district level cricket,” he added.
