Aziza killing

Prime accused Beauty Begum arrested

Our Correspondent, Narsingdi

The Sylhet Region-9 team of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) finally arrested Beauty Begum and her mother Sanowara Begum, both prime accused in the Aziza Akter killing case, from Mirergaon village under Bishwanath upazila in Sylhet district around 1pm yesterday. The officer-in-charge (OC) of Shibpur police station, Sayeduzzaman, told this correspondent that acting on a tip-off, the RAB team raided Mirergaon village and arrested Beauty Begum and Sanowara Begum. The duo were named as prime accused in the FIR lodged in connection with the murder

of Aziza Akter. Robel, another accused named in the FIR, is still on the run.

Abdus Satter, father of Aziza, had filed a murder case with Shibpur police station against Beauty Begum, Sanowara Begum, Robel, Tormuja Begum and three unknown persons.

The OC said that Tormuja Begum, an accessory to the crime, who had given her statement to the police under Section 161, said that Abdus Salam, the husband of Beauty Begum, went to Malaysia about four months ago.

In the absence of her husband, an illicit relationship developed between Beauty and Robel.

Aziza Akter, a primary schoolgirl, went to Beauty's house and found Beauty and Robel in a compromising position. This made them anxious about their social standing and they planned to kill Aziza to stop her from revealing the truth.

Beauty and Robel, along with three to four associates, rushed to Aziza's house and forcibly picked up the girl with the help Tormuja Begum around 7pm on October  27. Aziza's parents were not at home at that moment. They took Aziza to a nearby place and poured kerosene on her before setting fire to the body.

When the victim was shouting for help, locals rushed to the scene and informed her parents.

On receiving information, Aizaza’s parents and other family members rushed to spot and rescued her. She was immediately sent to the Narsingdi Zilla Hospital. Later, she was referred to the Burn Unit of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital Burn Unit (DMCH), where she died on October 28.
