9 rescued while being trafficked

The members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested nine people from Thakurpur border area under Damurhuda upazila, while they were being trafficked to India early Monday.

The arrestees include five women, two men and two children and hailed from Jhikabari village in Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj district.

BGB sources said acting on a tip-off, a team of BGB-6 battalion conducted a drive in different areas along Thakurpur border and arrested them.

The arrestees were later handed over to Damurhuda Model Police Station, police said.

A case was filed.

Medicine worth Tk 14 lakh

seized at Benapole

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized import-banned Indian medicine worth Tk 14 lakh from Benapole on Monday night.

Lt Col Ariful Haque, commanding officer of BGB-49 battalion, said that on secret information, a team of BGB members conducted a drive in the check post area and recovered the medicine. Sensing the presence of BGB, the smugglers fled the scene.

A case was filed with Benapole Port Police Station.

Minor girl violated in Chandpur

A seven-year-old girl was violated allegedly by a young man in Sontoshpur area of Faridganj upazila of Chandpur district on Monday afternoon.

Quoting locals, Shah Alam, officer-in-charge of Faridganj Police Station, said Nurul Islam, 32, a resident of Asta village in Khajuria area, took the girl in a room of a guard of local fish enclosure when the girl was passing it around 3:30 pm and violated her there, leaving her injured.

Hearing screaming of the girl, locals rushed in and caught Nurul. Later, the accused was handed over to police.

The injured girl was admitted to Chandpur Government General Hospital.

Students get stipend from Khwaja Mozammel Hoque (R) Foundation

Khwaja Mozammel Hoque (R) Foundation (KMRF), a Sufi based welfare organisation, gave stipends and honorary certificates to 1,801 meritorious students who achieved GPA-5 in JSC and JDC examinations this year from 86 schools of Sirajganj.

The foundation distributed the stipends and certificates at Provakar Vidyaniketan premises (Tamai High School playground) in Belkuchi upazila of the district on Monday.  

The foundation chairman Khwaja Tipu Sultan was present as the honorable chief guest and handed over the stipends and reward certificates among the admirable students.

In the speech, the chief guest addressed, “Seventeen years ago we arranged this event with a view to helping students be a true human being.”

Deputy Commissioner Kamrun Nahar Siddika presided over the programme. District Education Officer Md Shafiullah, UNO Md Oliuzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Belkuchi police station Md Sazzad Hossain and headmaster of Provakar Vidyaniketan Abdullah Al Mahmud also spoke on the occasion.
