Man to die for possessing heroin

A court in Chapainawabganj on Sunday sentenced a drug peddler to death in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act in 2012. The convict is Shariful Islam, 30, of Char Kodalkathi village in Sadar upazila.

According to the prosecution, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) conducted a drive in Kodalkathi border area and arrested Shariful along with 3.7 kg of heroin on March 29, 2012. His accomplice Kamal Hossain, however, managed to flee.

BGB Naib Subedar Mobarak Hossain filed a case with Sadar Police Station on March 30, 2012 over the incident.

Sub-inspector Matiur Rahman of the police station submitted a charge-sheet against Shariful and Kamal on May 22, 2012. After examining the records and witnesses, Chapainawabganj Additional District and Session’s Judge Mohammad Ziaur Rahman handed down the verdict acquitting Kamal.

Hundi trader arrested at Benapole

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a hundi trader along with 36,000 Indian rupees from no-man’s land area of Benapole international check post on Sunday night.

The arrestee was identified as Rumon Khan, 31, a resident of Sibganj area in Sylhet district town.

Lt Col Ariful Haque, commanding officer of BGB-49 battalion, said that tipped off that a hundi trader was carrying a large amount of money from India to Bangladesh, a team of BGB members conducted a drive in the area and arrested him along with the rupees. A case was filed with Benapole Port Police Station in this connection.

jailed for taking bribe

Two employees of Faridpur Deputy Commissioner’s office were sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on charges of taking bribe. The convicts are Md Khalilur Rahman and Atikur Rahman, surveyors of Faridpur DC office.

Mobile Court magistrate Md Motiar Rahman Khan handed down the punishment on Sunday.

According to sources, the duo were taking bribe from two siblings Yunus Molla and Ibrahim Molla alluring them in getting compensation money against land acquisition for the Saltha-Faridpur road extension. Being informed, Magistrate Md Motiar Rahman Khan conducted a drive in Jhilattuli area of the town in the afternoon and caught them red handed along with Tk 3 lakh bribe money.
