Awful performance in SA shocks fans

Bashar thinks BPL is perfect platform to raise nat’l T20 team

The 83-run defeat to South Africa in the last match of the series, led not only to series whitewash, but also gave the final nail on the coffin of an woeful four weeks long series, considered as Bangladesh’s worst in the history.

By winning the last and second T20, South Africa made it 7-0 across the format, much to the embarrassment of Bangladesh who came here with high hopes following their epic performance at home and abroad in the last two years. To their pleasure, the pitch was not typical South African, instead it was a wicket with completely sub-continental flavour. Yet the margin of defeat in each match was eye-popping—333 run in the first Test, an innings and 254 runs in the second Test, 10-wicket, 104 and 200 runs defeat in three-match ODI series and thereafter a 20 runs and 83 runs defeat to two-match T20 series.

Earlier this year, Bangladesh also lost all of the matches in New Zealand across the formats but in every game they put up huge fight and even created some chances to win some matches. The condition and pitch though wasn’t traditional New Zealand type, still was obviously tougher than this South Africa.

Therefore the question came to the fore—why the performance was such dismal when the condition wasn’t entirely in disfavour. Shakib Al Hasan was believed to be instrumental in Bangladesh’s rejuvenation in the T20 series as the captain after they produced a shocking performance in Test and ODI series under the leadership of Mushfiqur Rahim and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza.

The performance in the first T20 raised a hope of saving the face but the last T20 remained as the image of Bangladesh’s total abysmal performance, sparking the question once again whether they are yet to learn the art of the shortest format of the cricket.

However there was report that internal clash and difference with the head coach Chandika Hathurusingha led such a dismal performance in the series but inside Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) no one was ready to accept it.

Selector Habibul Bashar Sumon, also the former skipper of the team, became clueless when asked about the performance.

“I am also finding the answer of such abysmal performance like you,” he said. “I am sure everybody will agree that this is not the standard of Bangladesh cricket. We showed composure even in the tougher condition. The condition in England during the Champions Trophy wasn’t easier but we came out with good result. It’s not actually clear to me still.”

“When the team played badly, we became busier to put blame on others. This is not good for our future. We have to stop the blame game. A series against Sri Lanka and BPL is coming up. We have to find out the problems and need to work on that. It is sure we couldn’t play well in any department. And finally it’s not our standard.”

After the match at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom, Shakib said that the negativity among the Bangladesh players spread like a "virus" as they got thrashed one game at a time on their South Africa tour.

He also added that once they were handed the drubbings in the two Tests, the morale within the group started to go down, and it culminated in poorer performances in the ODIs, Bangladesh's favourite format, and T20s.

Bashar agreed with Shakib saying, “When the team went down at game after game, it’s natural to be down in psychologically. So it affected the whole team.”

“Moreover T20 cricket is more difficult for us. Still we did better in the first match but the way David Miller batted in the second game, we had nothing to do.”

Bashar however prescribed to take Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) seriously in bid to find out an effective T20 team.

“Aside South Africa series, we have already proved that we started playing good cricket in Test and we have already become a forced to be reckoned with in ODI cricket. But we have shortcomings in T20. BPL is the good platform to get a good T20 side. Renowned players are in the BPL so it’s the time for our young players to get some tips from them, share experience. If we can continue the BPL, I think we’ll get a good T20 team within one or two years.”
