Two men, one of them armed with a firearm, allegedly attempted on life of the President of Rajshahi Union of Journalists (RUJ) in the city yesterday.
Kazi Shahed, RUJ President, managed to escape the attack unhurt by speeding his motorcycle into Boalia police station.
Police arrested one SM Abdul Kajim, 48, chief reporter of local daily Upachar after Shahed filed a case accusing him and another unknown man with Boalia police station, said the OC Amanullah.
The incident took place at 12am when Shahed along with a friend was at a tea-stall near Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce building in the city, Shahed told this correspondent.
Kajim with his associate went to the scene in a motorcycle and his associate pointed a firearm targeting Shahed.
They chased them when Shahed and his friend was speeding toward the police station in his motorcycle, said Shahed.
“I did not know Kajim well. I do not also know why he would attack me,” said Shahed.
However, Kajim told the police that Shahed brought false charges against him as he protested his actions in a press conference recently, said the OC Amanullah.
Local journalists protested the attack and formed a human chain at Shaheb Bazar intersection at 12pm.
They demanded arresting the culprit by identifying him through CCTV camera footages of the city areas.
