General students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have boycotted their classes in protest against the incident happened last Friday on the campus. They took to the street demanding proper punishment to the attackers.
They said they have boycotted classes since three days and will not return to the classes until they get proper judgment.
At least 1500 students gathered at the cafeteria of the campus yesterday at 1pm and barricaded the road in front of the BUET at 2pm. At this time the vehicular movement was halted due to blockade.
Their demands include proper investigation into the incident, filing case against the perpetrators by the university authorities, constructing gates at the Plassey entrance and Bakshibazar entrance of the university to limit traffic on the campus.
Md Tariqujjaman , 3rd year student of civil engineering of BUET said, “We will not back to the class until the attackers get punishment. We have CCTV footage where anyone can identify the attackers of DU’s Zahurul Haq Hall but still authorities yet take step about the matter.”
Their other demands are — ensuring foolproof security of students, removal of foot bridge on the university campus within 72 hours which is allegedly a safe haven for drug addicts, and ousting the staff families from the campus who are allegedly involved in drug peddling.
Five BUET students were injured, one of them in critical condition, during a clash ensued between BUET and Dhaka University’s Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall on Friday last. BUET student was beaten up by the Asif Talukdar group of Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall on that clash claiming that BUET students picked up Imran of DU’s Zahurul Haq Hall before the incident started but BUET students refuted the allegation.
