The BNP yesterday (Monday) urged the government to place a bill on election-time government in the next session of Parliament.
“We appreciate Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her comments that she is ready to make any kind of sacrifice. Now, we urge her to make just a little bit of sacrifice by stepping down as Prime Minister to create an environment for handing over power through a free, fair and neutral poll under an election-time administration,” said BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon.
Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, he said the current Parliament has a legal basis, but no moral base. “So, the government can place a bill on election-time government in Parliament and formulate a poll-time government system through discussions with all political parties.”
On Sunday, while addressing a discussion at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre, the Prime Minister said she is ready to make any sacrifice to change the fate of people and fulfil Bangabandhu’s dream.
Ripon, who is also the BNP’s international affairs secretary, said it would not be a political defeat for the Prime Minister if she took the initiative to hold a free and fair election under an election-time government by removing the flaws in the previous caretaker system and modifying it.
