India yesterday handed over the memorabilia of Indian Naval aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, which made its mark in India-Bangladesh history during the 1971 Liberation War, for showcasing at the National War Museum.
Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pankaj Saran officially handed over a bridge window frame with a photograph of the ship and one set of Ceremonial Lifebuoy to the Chief of Staff of Bangladesh Navy Vice Admiral M Farid Habib at a simple ceremony at Sagorika Hall in the city’s Naval Headquarters, said a press release issued by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
Senior officials of the Indian High Commission, PSO’s of Naval Headquarters and senior officials were present at the occasion.
In 1971, Indian Navy Aircraft Carrier ‘INS Vikrant' played an important role to the Liberation War of Bangladesh. Active role of that Indian Naval warship during the war accelerated to surrender of Pakistani troops. INS Vikrant was formally de-commissioned in 1997. Following her de-commissioning it was marked for presentation as a museum ship from 2001 to 2012. In 2012 the museum was closed and the ship was scrapped in 2014.
Earlier in June 2015, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the ship’s “Steering Wheel” to the Prime Minister when he visited to Dhaka.
