Farmers smile as rains start in north

Rainfall has begun in the northern districts, bringing good news to the farmers who have been praying for showers to water their Aman seedbeds. Their harvests were under threat, as there has been scanty rainfall for a long period.
Though it was not much, it totalled 40mm in Rangpur until 6pm yesterday, followed by 40mm at Sayedpur, 40mm at Dinajpur and 23mm in Bogra. This, sources in the meteorological department said, ushered in possibilities of more rains, rising further from Wednesday and continuing till Saturday, when it is expected to start waning.
That would certainly bring relief to the farmers, desperately trying to irrigate the parched Aman seedbeds, the sources added.
Aman paddy constitutes one of the main groups of Bangladesh’s total food-grain output, which depends on a good monsoon. The monsoon system has become fairly active over the country, spurred by last week’s low pressure in the Bay of Bengal.
Meanwhile, the rainfall totalled 51mm in Chittagong, while Cox’s Bazar recorded the day’s highest (at 97mm).
