Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader has blamed BNP leaders and workers for the attack on former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s motorcade in Feni on Saturday. “The attack on Khaleda’s motorcade was pre-planned and staged by her own party leaders and workers to malign the ruling party,” he said while speaking to reporters at the Secretariat yesterday.
Earlier, a motorcade carrying senior BNP leaders and journalists was attacked near Chauddagram area before entering Feni. The BNP delegation, led by party chairperson Khaleda Zia, had planned to stop at Feni for lunch on its way to the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar.
After Khaleda’s vehicle had passed, a group of armed men attacked the motorcade and damaged 30 vehicles, mostly those belonging to the media. Some journalists were beaten up.
Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, said the BNP chief had staged the attack in her own constituency (Feni) to hold the Hasina government responsible for the incident.
The AL general secretary also dubbed the attack as an outcome of the BNP’s intra-party feud. “They fought among themselves and are trying to put the blame on us,” he claimed. He, however, said those behind the attack would be arrested soon. Quader said some motorcycle-borne vandals had ‘pelted stones’ at the motorcade near Chauddagram and attacked the media. “Why will the ruling party launch attack on the media?” he asked. He said the attack was pre-planned and staged by BNP men to draw more attention to Khadela Zia’s visit to Cox’s Bazar.
“When people hardly bothered about her visit, they staged the incident near her own constituency and put the blame on the government,” he claimed.
Khaleda's motorcade stopped at Feni after the incident. It reached Chittagong on Saturday night. Khaleda spent the night at Chittagong Circuit House.
