‘Around 1.5 lakh shelters needed’

The government will move the Rohingya refugess to Bhasanchar if the current crisis lingers. “Since 1978, around 10 lakh Rohingyas have been living in Bangladesh. The international community should put pressure on the Myanmar authorities to bring back these forcibly displaced citizens from Bangladesh,” disaster management and relief minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya told reporters after an inter-ministerial meeting at the Secretariat yesterday.

He said the government is developing Bhasanchar to relocate Rohingyas from Cox’s Bazar’s Kutupalong to Bhasanchar if the process of repatriation lingers.

“All the Rohingyas who entered Bangladesh from Myanmar since 1978 will be registered. About 3.25 lakh Rohingyas have already been registered and the remaining registration will be completed by December,” he said in reply to a query.

Around 1.5 lakh shelters are needed to accommodate the Rohingyas, he said, adding that the government has already built 131,000 shelters at Kutupalong areas.

“Maintaining law and order in these areas is the first priority. That is why the government has decided to set up five police camps inside the Rohingya camps,” Maya said.

When asked about the killing incident at Rohingya, the minister replied: “A local person has been killed by the Rohingyas. The police have already arrested two persons. They will be brought to book.”

The Rohingya camps have been divided into 20 blocks, he said, adding: “At least 30,000–50,000 people will be kept in each block. The World Food Programme (WFP) has already constructed 14 warehouses to store food grains with a capacity 300–350 tonnes each. A total of 34 warehouses will be built.”

He also said the WFP would feed 5.5 lakh Rohingyas. “Each family is getting 50kg of rice edible oil, salt and lentil per month,” he added.

“Around 35,000 sanitary latrines are needed. The government has already constructed 10,000 such toilets. Besides, the Turkish government has agreed to build 20,000 more toilets for the Rohingyas,” Maya said.

At least 8,000 tube wells are needed to provide drinking water to the Rohingyas, the minister said. “We’ve already installed 4,000 tube wells at the Rohingya camps. Besides, the Turkish government will set up 2,000 tube wells there,” he added.

He also said 22km of roads will be constructed in and around the Rohingya camps. “The Bangladesh Army has already completed five to seven km by laying bricks,” the minister added.

The government has installed 135 electric poles to supply electricity across 18 kms, Maya said, adding the solar power-run system will work during load shedding or any mechanical faults.

Speaking about pregnant Rohingya women in the camps, the minister said: “About 30,000 Rohingya women are pregnant. Of them, 800 have already given birth to their children. There are 24,000 orphans. Of them, 4,000 have lost their parents.”

The government and other international organisations are involved in providing education to Rohingya kids in their own native language.
