Russia to play role in addressing Rohingya crisis: Deputy speaker

STAFF REPORTER

The deputy speaker of Parliament, Fazle Rabbi Miah, yesterday said Russia will play a role in addressing the Rohingya crisis, which is posing a threat to Bangladesh. The deputy speaker of the upper house of Russian Parliament, Ilias Uma Khan, gave such an assurance to Bangladesh at the 137th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) assembly, Fazle Rabbi told journalists at the Parliament Members’ Club. The IPU assembly was held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, from October 14 to 18.

Fazle Rabbi said Bangladesh had made a mark at the assembly, where a resolution was adopted on the Rohingya crisis after the matter was placed as an emergency item.

“The resolution on the Rohingya crisis was adopted after voting. Only China expressed its reservation and Myanmar did not accept the resolution. World leaders approved the resolution with ovation. It’s a great achievement for Bangladesh,” he added.

He said the proposed Rohingya issue was approved as an emergency item after it got 1,027 votes. In contrast, Myanmar got only 47 votes.

The deputy speaker said: “In our speech at the IPU assembly, we said that the Bangladesh government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is providing shelter and food to the Rohingyas. But Myanmar has to take the responsibility for a permanent solution to the crisis.”  “This is pre-planned killing. Myanmar has to take its people back. The world community has to play a role here to address the crisis. The five-point proposal of Sheikh Hasina and the Anan Commission report have to be implemented to address the crisis,” he added. Chief whip ASM Feroz, whip Shahiduzzaman Sarker, whip Atiur Rahman Atik, and former information minister Abul Kalam Azad were present, among others, on the occasion.
