The Chinese ambassador in Dhaka, Ma Mingqiang, reiterated yesterday that China will support Bangladesh in finding a solution to the Rohingya crisis. “I hope the Rohingya problem will be settled peacefully as soon as possible—Bangladesh and Myanmar will sit down and resolve this problem,” he said at an agreement-signing ceremony of the Economic Relations Division (ERD) in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city. “We also express our commitment to stand next to Bangladesh (regarding the Rohingya problem). We do hope that this issue will be peacefully settled as soon as possible,” he said.
The occasion was the handover of an acceptance certificate of Chinese fire-fighting equipment to Bangladesh procured with Chinese grant. The Chinese ambassador signed the acceptance certificate on behalf of China, while the secretary of the disaster management and relief department, Md Shah Kamal, signed it on behalf of Bangladesh.
Noting that China faces different kinds of natural disasters, such as floods, droughts, and earthquakes, resulting in losses of billions of RMB every year, Ma Mingqiang pointed out that Bangladesh also faces similar disasters. “Even today, you are facing a disaster—a serious problem of refugees.”
Terming Myanmar and Bangladesh as “friendly countries”, the Chinese ambassador said: “We hope that our two brothers (Bangladesh and Myanmar) will sit down and resolve this problem. I do see some visible progress in terms of discussion.”
Last month, the Chinese ambassador had said that China has been maintaining close contact with Bangladesh on the influx of Rohingyas into Bangladesh from Rakhine state of Myanmar.
He then reminded that the attacks on police in Rakhine in August this year have created this turbulent situation. He said that China is also in trouble because there are Chinese investments in Myanmar.
Since August 25, hundreds of villages have been burned to the ground, with more than 600,000 Rohingyas fleeing across the border to Bangladesh. Under intense global pressure, Myanmar has agreed to repatriate “scrutinised” refugees who can prove their residence in Rakhine.
Regarding the handover of fire-fighting and rescue equipment to Bangladesh, the Chinese ambassador said these include escalators, air compressors, generators and fork-lifts. He added that these would be of real help to Bangladesh to reduce the impact of disasters. Shah Kamal said these equipment would help train volunteers and other personnel on tackling disasters and conducting rescue operations.
