With the available local players, Dhaka Dynamites- the defending champions of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) held their first practice session ahead of the BPL-5 campaign at the BCB-National Cricket Academy (NCA) Ground yesterday.

Barring captain and its icon player Shakib Al Hasan, all the local players including batsmen Mehedi Maruf, Nadif Chowdhury, Jahurul Islam Omi (WK), Sadman Islam Anik, all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain Saikat along with fast bowlers Mohammad Shohid, Abu Haider Rony, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Noor Hossain Saddam and Saqlain Sojib attended the first day practice session.

Shakib, who has been playing the second and last T20 match against the Proteas, will join the team after returning home from South Africa on October 31.

Dhaka Dynamites CEO Obeid R Nizam briefed the players and coaching staffs before the outset of the maiden training session. Dynamites head coach Khaled Mahmud Sujon and bowling coach Talha Jubair, among others, were also present.

After few hours-long-practice session, all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain Saikat faced off media, where he said that they want to focus more on team’s performance and evolve throughout the tournament as a team game.

“Our target in BPL is to play as a team game,” said Mosaddek Hossain yesterday.

“Though we are a well-balanced team on pen and papers, we’ll try to play for the team and give top priority on team’s performance,” Saikat told media.

“We’ll then give importance on individual performance,” he added.

Dynamites ensured the service of Sri Lankan legendary wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara, Boom Boom Shahid Afridi, Australian all-rounder Shane Watson, West Indies spin all-rounder Sunil Narine and Pakistan paceman Mohammad Amir.

Youngster batsman Rovman Powell, batsman Asela Gunaratne, wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella, Zimbabwean all-rounder Graeme Cremer, bowler Ronsford Beaten, batsman Evin Lewis, South African batsman Cameron Delport, bowler Shaheen Shah Afradi, all-rounder Kevon Cooper, English batsman Joe Denley and bowler Akeal Hosein will shine with bat and bowl along with them.

“This year the management has been formed such a team to be champions again,” he said.

“But it will not be champions by saying only. For this we have to prove it in the field. It will be understood properly how much balance the team has been made for this time. We could assess the overall team after playing one-two matches of the BPL.

Foreign players of Dhaka are yet to come. They will start arriving in Bangladesh within the next few days as it is learnt from the team’s officials.

Saikat, who sidelined for the South African tour with eye infection, is struggling to get back for his past form and rhythm after being healed from his eye injury.

“I am out of the field after the Champions Trophy. My main challenge is to bring back my rhythm,” the promising youngster said, adding: “I want to start from the point from where I finished it. It is the same in BPL.”

“I don’t want myself to field without the approval from the physician. When they told me that I could be played since then I got down.”

He believes that if they get the support from their overseas players, they could then restore their championship.

“I used to know that we were a stronger side last year also. We had no pressure on us. We all got impetus from all the fronts. We’ve got almost the same squad. If local along with foreign players could give us support, we could then be champions this time around,” he thought.

On the other hand, Rajshai Kings, Rangpur Riders and Khulna Titans also did their practice with their players. Kings amongst them held their first practice session. The team will do their last practice today before traveling to Sylhet, the first host city of the BPL, on October 31.
