HC summons Comilla civil surgeon, two others

The High Court (HC) yesterday summoned the civil surgeon of Comilla and two others to appear before it over a botched c-section, where doctor stitched a womans womb leaving one of the twin fetus inside.
The HC bench asked the Comilla civil surgeon, owner of the Life Hospital and Digital Diagnostic Centre in Gouripur, Comilla and Dr Sheikh Hosne Ara Begum, who conducted the surgery, to appear before it on November 7 to explain their role regarding the incident. In a suo moto move, the HC bench comprising Justice Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque passed the order following newspaper reports published in two national dailies over the incident.
It also issued a rule asking the respondents to explain why they should not be directed to stop negligence in providing treatment to the patients. The health secretary, home secretary, director general of Department of Health Services, civil surgeon of Comilla, head of gynecology department of Comilla Medical College, mayor and chief executive officer of Comilla City Corporation, deputy commissioner of Comilla, owner of Gouripur Life Hospital and Hosne Ara have been made respondents to reply to the rule.
The HC bench came up with the order as Supreme Court lawyer Mahfuzur Rahman Milon drew courts attention to the newspaper reports over the matter. According to the reports, Dr Hosne Ara conducted c-section on Khadiza Akter, 22, wife of Awal Hossain of village Doulatpur under Homna upazila in Comilla, who was admitted to the clinic on September 18. The doctor stitched up Khadizaa womb right after bringing out one of her twin fetus, saying the surgery is done. She even declared the other fetus as tumour in her report.
Khadiza suffered from severe pain in her abdomen for one long month after going home from the clinic.
Later, she was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on October 25, where doctors brought out her another fetus in lifeless condition, report said.
