Demra gas line blast victim dies
One of the eight members of a family who suffered burn injuries in a gas line explosion at a house in Demra area of the capital on October 23 died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Friday.
Ratna Begum, 18, wife of Tofazzal Hossain, succumbed to her injuries at the DMCH burn unit in the afternoon, said assistant sub-inspector Babul Miah of the DMCH police camp. The gas line went off in the kitchen on the top floor of a two-storey building in the early morning of October as there was a leak in the pipeline, leaving the eight people injured.
The injured - Ratna, her husband Tofazzal, 22, Arif, 35, Shipon, 7, Emon, 18, Ferdousi, 35, Tasim, 2, and Alamgir, 40 - had been taken to the DMCH where Ratna died.
5,932 absent in CU admission test
About 5,932 admission seekers were absent in the first year admission test under ‘D’ unit’ of the Chittagong University (CU) for the academic session of 2017-2018 that was held on Friday.
A total of 39,336 candidates appeared in the admission test this year against 1144 seats while 33404 applicants were present in the test. Some 34 applicants contested against each under the unit.
Md Ali Asgon Chowdhury, proctor of CU said, “Without any unpleasant incidents, the ‘D’ unit examination was done fairly. Candidates will have to wait a few days to get results. The results will be published on the university’s website.”
Meanwhile, a total of 1, 26,107 admission seekers registered through the online against 4,924 seats under four units of the university. The admission test will continue till October 29. Details of the tests can be found on www.cu.ac.bd.
2 held with phensidyl in capital
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members in a drive arrested two drug peddlers along with 1,500 bottles of Phensidyl syrup from in the capital’s Mirpur area on Friday.
The arrestees were identified as Jashim Uddin, 33, and Md Nazmul Hasan, 28, residents of Sharsha upazila in Jessore. On information that some pushers had long been selling drugs there, a team of Rab-2 challenged a truck in front of Gate-1 of the Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard around 12:50pm and found 1,500 bottles of contraband syrup searching it.
Later, they arrested the two dealers from the truck.
During primary interrogation, the arrestees said they brought the drugs from Jessore border area.
1450 telephone lines disconnected
Nearly 1,450 telephone lines and internet services of Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) at different areas under the Gendaria Exchange is got disconnected due to snatching of its underground cable.
Skills Competition-2017 held
Technical and vocational students should be enriched with power of skill and innovation for making themselves a competent workforce to meet the gradually mounting demands of the modern era.
This view was expressed at a function by a host of speakers who urged all the technical students to acquire knowledge of building carrier to serve the nation effectively.
Rajshahi Mohila Polytechnic Institute (RMPI) organised the ceremony titled “Skills Competition- 2017” on its premises yesterday with the main thrust of flourishing latent talents of its students together with making them innovative. Skills and Training Enhancement Project supported the event.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Alamgir Kabir, RMPI Principal Omor Faruque and Vice-principals Engineer Rejaul Karim and Shariful Islam addressed the discussion.
Community Policing Day observed
Barisal Metropolitan Police observed Community Policing Day yesterday with a day long colorful programme including rally, discussion, blood donation and cultural programmes. Additional IGP Siddikur Rahman attended the programme as the chief guest.
To mark the day a rally was brought out from Barisal police lines premises and paraded main road of the city. A discussion was held at Ashwini Kumar Hall premises with additional police commissioner of BMP Abul Kalam Azad in the chair. The programme addressed among others by VC of Barisal University Prof. SM Imanul Haque, Additional divisional commissioner Md.
