The BNP has made it clear that it wants the formation of a neutral poll-time government and Army deployment during the next election. Speaking at separate events, BNP leaders have urged the government to form an election-time government by dissolving Parliament before the polls. “If the next general election is held without forming an election-time neutral government by dissolving Parliament and without Army deployment, it'll be only a repetition of the January 5, 2014 election,” BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.
Terming these two factors as crucial for holding a free and fair election, Fakhrul said a meaningful national election is not possible unless a neutral poll-time government is installed and the Army is deployed during the polls. “The existing political crisis wouldn’t be resolved if a meaningful election is not held,” he added.
Fakhrul reiterated that the Election Commission’s dialogue with different stakeholders, including the political parties, was an eyewash.
The BNP leader was talking to reporters after placing wreaths at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at Agargaon in the
capital yesterday. Fakhrul and other leaders of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, the youth front of the BNP, paid homage to party founder Ziaur rahman on the occasion of the party's 39th founding anniversary. BNP vice-chairman Barkatullah Bulu, chairperson’s adviser Amanullah Aman, joint secretary general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Jubo Dal president Saiful Alam Nirob, secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, among others, were present on the occasion.
Speaking at a function at the National Press Club, BNP standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury yesterday said people want magistracy power in the hands of the Army during the polls.
“The Army should be deployed during the polls. Holding a fair election won’t be possible without it,” he said, adding that the Awami League is opposing the demand lest it should fail to capture polling booths. He also demanded a level-playing field to ensure the participation of all political parties.
Bangladesh Ganatantrik Sangskritik Jote organised the meeting, with its adviser Rezabuddaulah Chowdhury in the chair.
