Interns assault patients relatives again

Interns have allegedly assaulted the relatives of a patient at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (SZMCH) again over a trifling matter, reports UNB. Besides, the elderly patient died as she was reportedly discharged from the hospital yesterday morning without completing her treatment. Witnesses said Mahela Bewa, 75, wife of late Bazlur Rashid of Puranapoil village in Sadar upazila of Joypurhat, was admitted to the female ward of the SZMCH medicine department on October 24.
Her son Gaziur Rahman, 45, and grandson Rumman Hossain Shanto, 25, came to visit her around 9pm on Thursday. At one stage, Shanto called an intern apa while inquiring about the condition of his grandmother. Being angered at the call, apa, a group of interns locked into an altercation with Shanto and his father.
At one stage, they swooped on the duo and beat them mercilessly, leaving them injured. Some patients said they went out of the ward being panicked by the incident. However, the injured were not allowed to take treatment at the hospital. Later, they went to Joypurhat Sadar Hospital, claimed Shanto.
He also said his grandmother was discharged from the hospital without completing her treatment whereby she died on the way to Joypurhat on Friday morning.
However, SZMCH deputy director Nirmalendu Chowdhury claimed that the relatives of the patient stalked a female physician which led to an altercation with the interns.
He also claimed that three interns were injured as the relatives attacked them at one stage of the altercation. About the release of the patient, Nirmalendu said the relatives got her released as her condition was critical.
Earlier on February 18 last, Alauddin Sarker, a heart disease patient, died at the hospital after he along with his son Abdur Rouf was assaulted by interns.
