Shamsur Rahman to be recalled at Bangla Academy today

To mark the 89th birth anniversary of eminent poet Shamsur Rahman which was observed October 23, Jatiyo Kabita Parishad and Shamsur Rahman Smirity Parishad have jointly organised a programme on the premises of Bangla Academy today. The programme will feature discussion, recitation and music rendition. Presided over by poet Muhammad Samad, poet Rabiul Hussain, Habibullah Siraji, Nasiruddin Yusuf and Kazi Rozy will attend the programme as discussant.

In the cultural part, Bhaskar Bandyopadhyay, Hasan Arif, Dalia Ahmed, Laila Hasan, Rafiqul Islam will recite poems while Rafiqul Alam, Oishika Nabi and others will render songs at the programme.

To note, born in 1929, was a Bangladeshi poet, columnist and journalist, who emerged in the later half of the 20th century, wrote more than sixty books of poetry and is considered a key figure in Bengali literature. Shamsur Rahman's first book of poetry, ‘Prothom Gaan Dwityo Mrittyur Agey’ (First Song Before the Second Death) published in 1960.  His famous poem ‘Shadhinota Tumi Robi Thakurer Ojhor Kobita, Obinashi Gaan’,  was written in 1971 during the Liberation War in Bangladesh. Besides, he wrote novels, children's literature, and an autobiography. He received ‘Adamjee Award’ in 1962, ‘Bangla Academy Award’ in 1969, ‘Ekushey Padak’ in 1977, ‘Swadhinata Dibosh Award’ in 1991, Mitsubishi Award of Japan  in 1992 and many more. He died on August 17, 2006 when he was 77. l
