An abduction case has been filed against seven Detective Branch policemen who were caught by the Army with ransom money. Abdul Gafur, the victim, filed the abduction case against the DB police with Teknaf police station. The accused were produced before the Cox’s Bazar court in the same case and chief judicial magistrate Mosharraf Hossain recorded their statements. The court also ordered to send the accused to jail. On Wednesday, Afrazul Haque, additional superintendent of police in Cox’s Bazar, sacked the accused DB police.
A three-member probe committee has been formed, with the SP as its chief, to investigate the incident. The committee has been asked to submit a report within a week.
On Wednesday, an Army team detained seven members of the DB police for collecting ransom after kidnapping a businessman in Teknaf. The Army also recovered Tk 1.7 million in cash from them.
Maj. Nazim Ahmed of the Sabrang Relief Centre at Teknaf, who led the Army team, told media that the DB team had abducted businessman Abdul Gafur from Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday and demanded Tk. 5 million as ransom. Family members of Abdul Gafur finally agreed to pay Tk. 1.7 million for his release. The DB men freed Gafur at Marine Drive area of Cox’s Bazar after receiving the money.
Following the complaint lodged by the victim’s family, the Army team intercepted a DB police vehicle at an Army check-post in Lambari area of the Cox’s Bazar Marine Drive. A DB sub-inspector managed to flee, but others were held.
Abdul Gafur has thanked the Cox’s Bazar police for their prompt action.
