Finally the Mouchak-Moghbazaar flyover was opened to the traffic yesterday after a prolonged wait. For the construction of this crucial piece of infrastructure in the capital, the inhabitants of that locality suffered a lot everyday, thanks to the slow pace of its construction. The deadline for finishing the work of the flyover was extended several times and with this the cost of the construction multiplied hugely. For a country with limited resources this should not have been the case.
As the construction work was slow enough, the broken roads below the flyover with piling-up of construction materials and poor traffic management generated constant wrath from the people at large. Inhabitants of the other parts of the city hardly ventured to go to that area because of the crowds, traffic jams and confusion there. Plights of people increased during the monsoon as the potholed and broken roads used to get submerged by water bringing in the real mess. The venue also became notorious for frequent road accidents.
However, before the yesterday’s opening of the flyover by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through a video conferencing from Gonobhabon, part of the flyover—two-kilometre four-lane carriageway section of the flyover stretching from Shaheed Captain Mansur Ali Sarani near Holy Family Hospital to Saat Rasta intersection (Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Sarani)—was inaugurated last year. But according to the original plan, the flyover was scheduled to be completed in 2015.
The purpose of constructing the Moghbazaar-Mouchak flyover was obvious: the roads in that crowded busy area were so narrow that traffic jam used to occur throughout the day. It is now expected that this four-lane flyover that crosses six intersections would ease traffic jam of the area as planned and bring relief to the people living there or going through the place.
For taking more passengers, minibuses and other forms of human haulers’ tendency is to going through the roads, instead of using a flyover in the capital. If that happens in the case of this flyover also, its actual purpose of easing the traffic would not be materialized. That is why the traffic police ought to be cautious to ensure its fullest utility. In absence of it, the flyover will be another showpiece of development for the relevant people without its practical use.
