Fallen tree halts traffic

Gaibandha: Vehicular movement on Dhaka-Rangpur highway has remained halted since yesterday morning as a big tree fell on the road at Palashbari due to storm coupled with heavy rains, reports UNB.

The traffic movement remained snapped from 7:30am, disrupting road communication of Dhaka with the country's northern parts, witnesses said.

They said some 2,000 vehicles - buses and trucks-- on both sides of the highway got stranded, causing immense woes to thousands of passengers amid incessant rains.

Police said they started removing the tree from the highway with the help of local people to restore traffic on the busy highway. It may take hours to clear the highway, police added.

PCJSS man shot dead

Khagrachhari: An activist of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti (PCJSS, MN group) was shot dead by some miscreants in Kamalchhari Christianpara area in Sadar upazila on Friday night, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Samayun Chakma, 45.

Major Mujahedul Islam, staff officer of Khagrachhari region, said Samayun Chakma was killed by members of his rival group. Locals alleged that UPDF members killed Samayun, Mujahedul Islam added.

Arms, ammo recovered

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered two foreign-made pistols, four magazines, 14 rounds of bullet and 96 bottles of phensidyl from the bank of the river Pagla near Naldbi Bazar under Shibganj upazila yesterday morning.

Commanding Officer of BGB-59 Battalion Lieutenant Colonnel Md Rashed Ali said acting on a tip-off, a patrol team of BGB from Chakpara border out post conducted a raid in the area at about 10 am. Sensing their presence, two smugglers fled away leaving their four luggages, he added. The BGB members have found the arms, ammunition and the bottles of  phensidyl after searching the luggages.

Woman found dead

Police recovered the body of a woman from Potengali village of Sadar upazila on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Parbati, 27, wife of Nirab, a resident of Mahidia village in Sadar upazila.

Azmal Huda, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said local people found the slaughtered body on Friday morning and informed police. Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Jessore 250-Bed Hospital for an autopsy.
