Move underway to preserve 360 historic Liberation War sites

The government has initiated a move to preserve some 360 historic sites of the 1971 Liberation War across the country to uphold the sacrifices of millions of martyrs, reports UNB.

“The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has proposed a draft project to the Planning Commission to this end and it's likely to be placed before Tuesday’s Ecnec meeting for its consideration,” said a Planning Commission official.

Another official at the ministry said the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) will implement the proposed project in 294 upazilas of 64 districts by June 2020 at Tk 179 crore. “The money will come from the state coffer,” he said. The main objective of the project is to project the history of the War of Liberation to the future generation and uphold its spirit.

Another official at the Liberation War Affairs Ministry said although the War of Liberation took place across the country, but it is not possible to identify and preserve all the Liberation War Affairs sites.

Under the circumstances, Liberation War Affairs Museum, Deputy Commissioners of the relevant districts, members of parliament and valiant freedom fighters, and some local elite have identified some historic war sites and sent it to the ministry following its initiative.

“Among all the primarily selected sites, the Liberation War Affairs Ministry has selected 360 sites and included those in the proposed project,” the official said wishing anonymity.

Of the selected 360 sites, he mentioned, 47 sites have been categorised as Type A for building memorial infrastructures there considering the importance of those sites at the national level while the rest of 313 have been categorized as Type B.

Of the type A sites, liberation war sculptures, monuments, murals, terra-cotta will be installed in some eight historic war sites with other public facilities while museums will be built in the rest of 39 Type A sites having libraries, small conference rooms and rooms for supervisors.

Besides, two rectangular pillars with altars will be built in each of the 313 Type B historic war sites having sitting arrangements for the visitors, entertainment facilities for children, wash blocks and food blocks. Each of the Type A establishments will cost Tk 58.07 lakh while each of the Type B establishments Tk 35 lakh.

The Pre Evaluation Committee (PEC) meeting on the proposed project was held on April 5 this year where the Planning Commission recommended implementation of the project subject to the fulfillment of some conditions.
