Adequate awareness must to prevent breast cancers

RAJSHAHI: Cancer specialists at a scientific seminar here yesterday observed that creating adequate public awareness could be the effective means of preventing breast cancer as its curse is increasing day by day, reports BSS.

They opined that many women patients are suffering from breast cancers and they need timely and properly preventive measures to thwart dire consequence caused by the disease. Whereas they added that the breast cancer could be prevented through early detection and creating public awareness is needed in this regard.

Professor Dayem Uddin Cancer Foundation and Sanofi Oncology jointly orgainsed the seminar at a restaurant in the city.

During his keynote presentation, Professor Dayem Uddin, Chairman of the foundation, said breast cancer is the foremost causes of cancer related mortality of women in developing countries like Bangladesh. So, early detection and subsequent proper treatment is very important to prevent breast cancers.

He said the sufferings caused by the disease alongside the rate of mortality and morbidity could be reduced to a greater extent through early detection and timely and full-course treatment.

Prof Dayem, however, said wide-ranging creation of mass awareness could be the effective means of addressing the social burden. Terming the breast cancer as risky diseases he said its prevalence is higher among the women.

Creation of awareness, education to reduce high- risk sexual behaviour and measures to reduce and avoid exposures to STIs were proved as the primary preventive measures of the disease while treatment of pre- cancerous lesions requires a practical test were found as the secondary preventive measure.

“Around 15,000 new cases of breast cancer are being detected every year in the country,” Dr Dayem mentioned. Cancer Specialists Dr Shahla Hossain and Dr Sakera Sultana also spoke on the occasion.
