Good teachers needed in primary schools

The country can ill afford to have its primary schools without teachers

It is good to know that the Directorate of Primary Education is going to recruit some 20,000 fresh teachers. According to a report of this newspaper yesterday, about 60,000 posts of teachers including headmasters are lying vacant for a long time. The country can ill afford to have its primary schools without teachers. As there was a court restriction on recruiting teachers, the DPE could not recruit teachers since 2014. The court recently withdrew this decision paving the way for fresh recruitment.

Now, the need for quality teachers in primary schools run by the government can hardly be overemphasized. But since money and influence play a big role in recruiting government staff, quite often the government does not get meritorious people for its job done. And as candidates get their job spending money, hence his primary preoccupation during his job is to make money through foul means.

Corruption brings more corruption and the cycle goes on. That is why it is necessary to plug the hole of corruption just in the beginning. Though in the sphere of primary education, there is not much to get involved in corruption, the fact of the matter is, if a candidate’s merit is not looked for during the time of recruitment, ultimately it is the purpose of imparting quality education to students will not be materialized.

That is why it is very important to find out able candidates for teaching posts during the time of recruitment. The authorities at the Directorate of Primary Education must ensure that money and influence—political influence to be precise—cannot play viciously in recruiting teachers and principled persons get the job of teaching our children.

Once the 20,000 posts are filled, the Directorate should start work for filling up all the vacant posts of teachers in phases. It should particularly ensure that all the government primary schools get their headmasters. Fund for the newly recruited teachers should not be a concern here. There are many projects of the government where money is going down the drain.

Education should be taken as the core strength to develop our nation and here the government should not be thrifty. By increasing fund allocation it should increase the number of such schools in rural areas so that students of villages get quality education in nearby places.
