Khaleda hampering trials: Quader

STAFF REPORTER

The Awami League (AL) general secretary, Obaidul Quader, has said that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has been hampering the work of the judiciary by repeatedly seeking time from the court. “It's not true that the court is harassing her [Khaleda], rather she is harassing the court by seeking time by citing her illness. This way, she is hampering the work of the judiciary,” he said while addressing an extended meeting of the Dhaka City North Awami League in the city yesterday (Friday). During the hearing on her graft cases on Thursday, Khaleda Zia had claimed that allegations of misappropriation of money in the cases were false and intended to harass her. Quader, who is also the minister for road transport and bridges, alleged that the BNP has two different positions on the judiciary. It considers the judiciary independent if the verdict goes in its favour. But when the verdict goes against the party, the BNP accuses the AL of influencing judges. “Does deferment of court hearings (in Khaleda's cases) about 150 times prove the BNP's faith in the honourable court?” he said.

Citing the scuffle among Khaleda's lawyers on the court premises on Thursday, Quader said the incident proves that they are not respectful to the law. He wondered what would happen if the party come to power. Referring to the talks with the Election Commission (EC) on poll preparations, Quader said: “The AL didn't oppose deployment of the Army during elections. We urged the EC to take all steps in line with the country's existing law to ensure fair polls.” The AL general secretary launched the party’s membership drive in the city (north) and called upon leaders and workers to remain alert so that anti-Liberation forces cannot infiltrate into the party. He said the main aim of the party’s membership drive is to attract young voters. The AL launched the membership drive on May 20.
