The 53rd birth anniversary of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, observed yesterday, reports UNB.
On October 18, 1964, Sheikh Russel was born at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi in the capital.
He was killed along with most of his family members, including Bangabandhu, on August 15, 1975, when he was a student of Class-IV of University Laboratory School.
Awami League, its associate bodies and different socio-cultural organisations organised various programmes on the occasion. The programmes include placing wreaths at his grave at Banani Graveyard, milad and doa mahfils, seminars and discussions.
A milad and doa mahfil was held at Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi after Maghrib prayers attended by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the elder sister of Sheikh Russel.
A special munajat was offered seeking eternal peace of the departed soul of Sheikh Russel as well as Bangabandhu and other martyrs of the August 15 carnage.
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) cut a cake at 'Soparjito Swadhinata Chattar' in front of Dhaka University's Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) and distributed educational materials among the school children, marking the day.
BCL President Saifur Rahman Sohag, General Secretary SM Jakir Hossain and its DU unit President Abid Al Hasan were, among others, present.
