Talk less

Al tells CEC
Abu Jakir

The ruling Awami League (AL) has suggested that the chief election commissioner (CEC), KM Nurul Huda, should talk less on any issue.

The AL came up with the suggestion during its talks with the Election Commission (EC) yesterday.  The EC initiated dialogue with 40 registered political parties on August 24, to take their opinions on its preparation for the next national election slated for 2019.

After the talks, AL central working committee member ABM Reazul Kabir Kawsar spoke to this correspondent. He said some of their senior leaders suggested that the CEC should talk less on any issue to avoid controversy.

On October 15, during his dialogue with the BNP, the CEC had praised the late president Ziaur Rahman for introducing multi-party democracy in the country. For this, the CEC had to face criticism from the AL.

Meanwhile, after attending the meeting with the EC, Obaidul Quader, also the spokesperson the ruling AL, briefed the media where he replied that CEC Nurul Huda explained them why he made such comment.

“We got the explanation, but won’t disclose it. If necessary, the Election Commission will give the explanation,” he said.

“The statements of the chief election commissioner, other commissioners and the secretary were positive. The dialogue with the election commission is fruitful,” he added.

According to meeting sources, AL presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim said CEC Nurul Huda should not create controversy regarding settled issues by making irresponsible statements. “You [CEC] need not convince any political party to make them take part in the next general election. It is none of your business whether political parties join the next polls or not. Political parities will join the next polls in their own interests,”

AL presidium member and health minister Mohammad Nasim suggested that the CEC watch Bangla films when he feels frustrated over elections.

During the meeting, AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif and AL presidium member Dr Abdur Razzak suggested that the EC take legal action against online news portals, if any news portal uploads fake pictures of rigging or publishes fabricated news during polling  hours.

AL advisory council member Amir Hossain Amu told the EC that the government will help the commission to hold the next polls in a free, fair and credible manner.

Earlier, around 11:00am, a 21-member AL delegation, led by Obaidul Quader, met the CEC and placed an 11-point proposal, including use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Army deployment without magistracy power in the general elections.
