Handling of Rohingya crisis

9 US senators praise Hasina

STAFF REPORTER

Nine US senators have written to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to congratulate her on her ‘strong leadership and compassion’ in keeping Bangladesh’s borders open and providing assistance to more than half a million Rohingya refugees fleeing horrific violence in Myanmar.
The letter also said Bangladesh’s decision and the government’s extraordinary generosity in ensuring the safety and shelter for the Rohingyas was a beacon of hope as the world watched the Rohingya crisis unfold.
The statement was signed by Sen. Benjamin L Cardin of Maryland, Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado, Sen. Richard J Durbin of Illinois, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, Sen. Christopher A Coons of Delaware and Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey. Seven among these senators are Democrats and the rest are Republicans.

The statement also welcomed Hasina’s address to the United Nations General Assembly on September 22 on the Rohingya crisis and her support for full implementation of the Kofi Annan Commission’s recommendations.
The letter calls for a UN fact-finding mission to be given immediate access to Myanmar’s Rakhine state to gather credible evidence of grave human rights violations including gender-based violence.
“We understand that the challenges for Bangladesh are significant, given the strain from the pre-existing refugee population. Despite these challenges, Bangladesh has been a shining example for all countries in supporting fleeing civilians in desperate need of aid,” the letter said.
The senators said they were also aware of the strain the refugees put on Bangladesh’s limited resources, especially considering the refugee population that had been staying in the country prior to the recent influx.
They urged the Bangladesh government to work closely with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and other international agencies and NGOs to deal with the crisis. The senators also strongly expressed their commitment to assisting Bangladesh, as it is facing a difficult and complex challenge to protect the most vulnerable individuals fleeing atrocities in Myanmar.
