The Cabinet Committee on Purchase has approved a proposal of the food ministry to import of one lakh metric tonne of boiled rice from India at a cost of Tk 377.65 crore.
The approval was given at the yesterday meeting of the committee held at the secretariat with industries minister Amir Hossain Amu in the chair.
At present, there are a total of 4.85 tonne of foodgrains-rice 3.82 tonnes and wheat 1.03 tonnes-are in buffer godowns of the government.
After the meeting, additional secretary Mustafizur Rahman said that the quantities of rice would be imported under government-to-government (G to G) deal.
“The Indian state owned organisation PEC Limited will supply the rice,” he said.
In the proposal, Food Secretary Kaikobad Hossain, admitted that the prices of rice in the local markets remain unstable due to shortage of rice. “The rice harvesting was hampering due to heavy rainfall and flood in the country’s haor areas,” the proposal added.
