Sylhet transport strike called off

UNB

SYLHET: Hours after its enforcement, Sylhet Transport Owners-Workers Oikya Parishad withdrew its indefinite strike in the district on Wednesday following assurance of meeting their demands, reports UNB.

The decision came after a fruitful meeting between the transport owners and workers, and Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner at noon, said Zedan Al Misa, SMP additional deputy commissioner.

At the meeting, the police administration assured them of arresting the attackers of the workers.

Earlier, the transport owners and workers went on the indefinite transport strike in the district at 6am, causing immense sufferings to thousands of passengers.

Bus services to and from Sylhet came to a halt and ticket counters remained closed since Tuesday night. No bus left the Kadamtali Central Bus Terminal during the strike that lasted six and half an hours.

Besides, the plying of CNG-run auto-rickshaws and human haulers came to a halt following resistance by the transport workers since the morning.

Earlier on Tuesday, Sylhet Transport Owners Workers Oikya Parishad called the strike following the attack on transport workers allegedly by a group of Jubo League leaders at Tajmahal Hotel in Dakkhin Surma upazila.
