DHAKA: The recent devastating flood caused Taka 15.68 crore loss in livestock and poultry sector in 21 flood affected districts across the country, said a Department of Livestock Services (DLS) report, reports BSS.
The onslaught of flood has damaged some 2,121 livestock and poultry firms, 13,159 cattle heads, 5,41950 poultry flocks and huge amount of animal and poultry feeds, the DLS report details.
“The DLS has already sent a proposal with an outlay of over Taka 52 crore to the concerned ministry for providing relief assistance to the flood affected livestock and poultry farmers across the country,”said Director General (DG) of the Department of Livestock Services.
The proposed money would also be spent for vaccination, drugs, feed supply for flood affected livestock and poultry feed, he added.
Meanwhile, the DLS has ensured emergency healthcare service through providing vaccination and drugs for the livestock and poultries by deploying 130 medical teams at upazila level, Haq said.
The DLS, so far, has provided vaccines to some 3,37,840 livestock and 8,45,936 poultry flocks and health care services to 1,40,945 livestock and 8,25,415 poultry flocks in 21 districts, the DG said.
In Naogaon district, a total of 806 livestock firms and 4,532 cattle heads were damaged during the onslaught of flood.
In Tangail, a total of 334 livestock firms and 7,101 cattle heads were damaged in the devastating flood while 490 poultry firms and 3,85,000 flocks were damaged in the flood in the district.
In Kurigram, some 197 livestock firms and 1074 cattle heads were damaged in the district.
In addition to this, 491 tonnes cereal animal food worth of Taka 1.50 crore and 10,187 tonnes hay (straws) worth of Taka 7.07 crore were also damaged in the flood.
Regarding the rehabilitation programme in livestock sector, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Narayon Chandra Chanda said “We have send a message to the government ... a proposal has also been sent to the finance ministry ...But no further initiative so far has been taken by the government.”
