A book on renowned artist Alakesh Ghosh titled ‘Life and Works: ALAKESH GHOSH’ published by Cosmos Books was launched on Sunday, reports UNB. Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor unveiled the cover of the book at a ceremony at the Sufia Kamal Auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum in the evening as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said a book on the life and works of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin, who is considered the pioneer of Bangladeshi modern art, will be published soon. “Books on the lives and works of other eminent artists, including Quamrul Hassan, will also come out gradually,” he said.
Bangladesh National Museum and Gallery Cosmos jointly arranged the book launching ceremony.
Noor said: “We’ve just established a relation of cooperation with Gallery Cosmos and I hope this relation will be strengthened in the future.”
About artist Alakesh Ghosh, the minister said Alakesh is a very simple person but his artistic capability is really extraordinary.
He said if one wants to touch the nature of Bangladesh, he or she can do so from the arts of Alakesh.
Gallery Cosmos Chairman Enayetullah Khan said the new generation of artists can learn many things from the life and works of artist Alakesh.
“But, whether you’re an artist or a journalist, you must be an honest and good person,” he added.
South Korean Ambassador in Dhaka Ahn Seong-Doo said Bangladesh’s art boasts its unique mixture of artistic influence from Buddhism, Islamism and Hinduism, and its resistance against the British.
He said Alakesh Ghosh is one of the most acclaimed painters in Bangladesh whom they owe many advancements and flourish of modern art in Bangladesh.
“He (Alakesh) brings an artistic touch and lively perspective to the every activity of people in Bangladesh which may otherwise seem dull and mundane,” the South Korean envoy said.
Director General of the National Museum Faizul Latif Chowdhury, eminent artist Samarjit Roy Chowdhury and artist Alakesh Ghosh also spoke on the occasion.
Later, the minister inaugurated a weeklong solo exhibition of Alakesh Ghosh at the museum’s Nalini Kanta Bhattashali Gallery. The exhibition is open to all every day from 9:30am to 5:30pm and 2:30 pm to 7:30 pm on Friday, until October 21.
