Annual science fair held at BSI
Baridhara Scholars Institutions (BSI) Annual Science Fair - 2017 was held in the School Complex in Dhaka Cantonment on Monday, says a press release.
The fair was inaugurated by the chief guest, Major General Ataul Hakim Sarwar Hasan, ndc, afwc, psc, PhD, Area Commander, Headquarters Logistics Area, Dhaka Cantonment and the chief patron of the BSI. Brigadier General Kh Md Mozammel Haque, psc, Commandant, COD Chairman, Governing Body, BSI was also present in the inauguration ceremony.
They visited all the projects and talked to the participants. The chief guest highly appreciated the creative and innovative potentialities of the young scientists of the BSI. Besides, the parents and other distinguished guests visited the projects and spoke very high of the standard of the BSI Science Fair-2017.
Breast cancer can be prevented through awareness
Awareness about breast cancer can play a vital role in preventing it, and making a patient realise in the beginning that she can be completely cured through treatment in Bangladesh.
At least 15,000 women in Bangladesh are afflicted with breast cancer every year and at least 7,000 die annually. This is alarming, but the figure can be reduced if awareness about the disease is created.
Experts said this at an open discussion named Caf Scientifique on Breast Cancer Scenario: Prevention and Awareness held at the Teachers Students Centrer (TSC) cafeteria. It was organised by the ICDDRB along Europe Union.
Dr Md. Habibullah Talukder Ruskin, associate professor and head of the Department of Cancer Epidemiology, National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital, was the key speaker. Ruskin said: Everyone knows prevention is better than cure, but not everyone is conscious about breast cancer.
Every year about 10 lakh women are afflicted with breast cancer. In Bangladesh, 27 per cent of the cancer afflicted women have breast cancer. But if we create awareness, we can prevent this.
If breast cancer is detected at the primary stage, it can be prevented.
Even boys can be afflicted with breast cancer, but possibility for women is 100 times more.
After 50, the possibility of breast cancer increases, and if women conceive after 30 years, the possibility goes up.
Dr Iqbal Anowar, Associate Professor Faria Hasan, Br Mostak Hossain, researchers of the ICDDRB and students of different institutions were present at the discussion.
21 RU, RUET students get PM gold medal
A total of eighteen students of Rajshahi University (RU) awarded with Prime Minister (PM) Gold Medal for their outstanding performances in their honours course results on 2015 and 2016 sessions respectively. They will receive the awards from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the upcoming PM Gold Medal giving ceremony, the release added.
The selected students of RU for 2015 session are Yasin Ali Masum of Arabic dept under Arts Faculty, Nazmul Huda of Law Faculty, Monira Perveen Kona of Economics dept under Social Science Faculty, Ehtasim Rabbi of Physics dept under Science Faculty, Lubatul Arbia of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology dept under Life and Earth Science Faculty, Shahanaz Akter of Accounting and Information Science dept under Business Faculty, Shamim Reza of Applied Physics and Electronic Engineering dept under Engineering Faculty, Puza Debi of Agriculture and Agronomy Extension dept under Agriculture Faculty and university controlled Medical and College student Zohora Akter.
On the other hand, the selected students for 2016 session for the prize are: HM Habibullah of Arabic dept, Bonsri Rani of Law dept, Kohinur Khatun of Sociology dept, Anika Nusrat of Pharmacy dept, Sifat Rahi of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology dept, Md Sagor Hossain of Accounting and Information Science dept, Jakia Jinath Chawdhury of Computer Science and Technology dept, Tanzina Khatun of Crop Science and Technology dept and RU controlled medical and College student Mohtarim Noor.
The three selected students of RUET under academic session 2016 are: Asraful Imran of Civil Engineering dept, Jahidul Islam of Industrial and Production Engineering dept and Rohul Amin Ratul of Electric Engineering dept.
